Highlights

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular and rewarding short treks in Nepal, located in the Annapurna region of western Nepal, primarily within Myagdi District of the Gandaki Province. Renowned for its accessibility and spectacular mountain scenery, this trek is an excellent introduction to Himalayan trekking. The journey usually begins from Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city and a major tourism hub, well known for its lakeside setting and views of the Annapurna range.

Most trekkers start the trek at Birethanti or Nayapul, which serve as entry points to the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA). At this point, trekkers’ permits—such as the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit)—are checked. From here, the trail gradually ascends through terraced farmlands, river valleys, and charming traditional villages inhabited mainly by Gurung and Magar communities, offering insight into local culture and rural mountain life.

Despite being a relatively short trek, the Ghorepani Poon Hill route is rich in natural beauty. The trail passes through lush oak and bamboo forests, especially rhododendrons, which bloom brilliantly in spring (March to April), covering the hillsides in red, pink, and white flowers. Along the way, trekkers encounter cascading waterfalls, suspension bridges, stone staircases, and scenic viewpoints that make every day of walking enjoyable and visually rewarding.

The trek reaches its highest overnight point at Ghorepani (2,870 meters), a picturesque village surrounded by dense rhododendron forests. Ghorepani is well equipped with comfortable teahouses and lodges, making it a pleasant place to rest and acclimatise. Early the next morning, trekkers hike for about an hour to Poon Hill (3,210 meters), the highlight of the trek. From this famous viewpoint, one can witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas, with panoramic views of more than seven major peaks, including Annapurna South, Himchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhampus Peak, and Dhaulagiri, one of the world’s highest mountains. As the rising sun paints the snow-covered peaks in golden and pink hues, the view is unforgettable.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is suitable for trekkers of all ages and fitness levels, including beginners and families. The trails are well-maintained, and daily walking time is moderate, typically 4 to 6 hours. The trekking portion usually takes three to four days, depending on the route and pace. At the same time, a complete itinerary—including arrival, sightseeing, and departure—generally spans seven nights and eight days.

Overall, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek offers an ideal combination of stunning mountain views, rich cultural encounters, and manageable trekking conditions, making it one of the best short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal.
