Highlights

The Three Passes Trek is one of the most exciting and complete trekking adventures in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek takes you across three high mountain passes: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m). It is a challenging trek, but the rewards are truly amazing.

This trek usually takes 16–20 days, depending on your walking pace and acclimatization days. It normally starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, and the trail passes through famous places like Everest Base Camp** (5,364m)** and the beautiful Gokyo Lakes.

What You Will See

During the trek, you can enjoy stunning views of the world’s highest mountains, including:

  • Mount Everest

  • Lhotse

  • Makalu

  • Cho Oyu

You will walk through green forests, cross long suspension bridges, pass glaciers, and explore traditional Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar and Thame. Along the way, you can experience Sherpa culture, visit monasteries, and see their unique lifestyle.

Difficulty Level

The Three Passes Trek is considered difficult because of:

  • High altitude (above 5,000 meters)

  • Long walking hours (6–8 hours per day)

  • Steep and rocky trails

Good physical fitness is very important. Proper acclimatization days are necessary to avoid altitude sickness.

Best Time to Go

The best seasons for this trek are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Clear skies, stable weather, and blooming rhododendrons.

  • Autumn (September to November) – Best mountain views and comfortable temperatures.

Winter is very cold, and summer (monsoon) has heavy rain and slippery trails.

Permits Required

You need:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
(TIMS card is no longer required for the Everest region.)

Guide and Porter

Hiring a guide and porter is highly recommended. A guide helps with:

  • Safe navigation

  • Managing altitude problems

  • Sharing local culture and history

A porter helps carry your heavy bag so you can walk comfortably.

Accommodation and Food

You will stay in local teahouses (simple mountain lodges). They provide basic rooms and warm meals like dal bhat, noodles, soup, potatoes, tea, and coffee.

The Three Passes Trek is not just a trek—it is a complete Himalayan adventure. It challenges you physically and mentally, but the breathtaking mountain views, peaceful lakes, and rich Sherpa culture make it a lifetime experience you will never forget.
